Essex Police Federation have recently started adding content to this content managed website we developed for them last year. The website aims to keep Police Officers in Essex up-to-date with the latest developments in their area as well as provide a source of information and advice relating to their profession.

Content management is ideal when frequent additions to a website are likely. Content management systems (CMS) offer a facility to add new pages to the site without the need for web development experience or a knowledge of code such as HTML. New articles and pages can be added in minutes and the structure of the site can be modified just as easily. On a website like this, where the information stored has to be kept up to date at all times, a content managed solution seemed the obvious choice. The Essex Polfed site was therefore built on the Joomla content management system, an open source application that is perfect for the volume of content expected.

In light of the professional nature of the site a simple, clean-cut design was used that allows the user to remain focused on the valuable content rather than be distracted by loud graphics and effects.

Essex Police Federation have also taken advantage of our support and maintenance service. Sometimes our customers do not have the resources, or enough technical know-how, to manage their site effectively in-house. In these situations we offer a support and maintenance contract, a simple arrangement whereby the customer sends over any updates they require and we add them to the website. We agree a fixed monthly fee for support (usually 1 – 2 hours), a guaranteed response time and the customer can be assured that all updates are carried out correctly by a trained professional. The support and maintenance contract is an economical choice too as we track each update down to the minute and are very efficient due to our experience in this area.

This site was built on the latest version of the Ballyhoo Commerce e-commerce system with secure payment processing through PayPal.

We have used test@ballyhoodemo.co.uk as an example in each step but you should substitute the email address or any other details we have supplied you with where appropriate.

Getting Started

Open Incredimail on your computer. Under the Tools menu select Email Accounts.

Mail Accounts

The Mail Accounts window will open. Select Add on the right-hand side of the window.

Account Wizard

The Account Wizard window will now open. Select Let me configure settings myself and click Next.

On the next screen select Other as your email account.

Under Connect To Your Account add your name, the email address you want to connect to and the password for your email account. Click Next.

Incredimail will cleverly look at the details you have already added and preset the incoming mail server type you require. If it does not, you need to set this as POP3.

Next add the Incoming mail server, this will be pop.yourdomainname. The Outgoing mail server will be mail.yourdomainname. Click Next.

Incredimail will then try to connect to your email account and fail. This is because there a few more setting we need to add. Click Skip.

Mail Accounts

Back in the Mail Accounts window, ensure the account you have just created is selected and click Properties on the right.

When this window opens click on the Servers tab. Check all the information in this window is correct and ensure My server requires authentication is ticked.

Now select the Advanced tab. Under Server Port Numbers change the outgoing mail number to 587 and the incoming mail number to 110. Click OK.

You will now have successfully configured your email account to operate through Incredimail. Try sending a few test emails and ask someone to email you to check everything is working as it should be.

The Ballyhoo Commerce e-commerce system also functions excellently as a content management system. The following instructions advise you how to add a basic content page to your e-commerce website.

Add A Content Page

Go to the website Admin Area and click on Content Manager in the top navigation bar.

Click on the content list to which you want to add another content page, to be found under Current Lists.

Content List Editor

Under Tools, select Add New Main Content Item.

Add New Content Item

Content Page will be selected as default under Content Type, use this to add a standard content page for information such as About, Contact, etc.

For each enabled language you will need to add:

Link Title

The link text as it will appear in the navigation.

Page Title

This is usually the same as the Link Title and appears at the top of the content page.

Content

The content of your page can be added to this field and formatted using the text-editing toolbar. Images, external links and other items such as PDFs can also be added in this field.

Click Insert to save the changes and add the new content page to your site.

Content List Editor

Change the order content pages appear in by dragging and dropping the page titles into any order you wish.

Amend any content page by clicking Edit to the right of the page title and delete a page by clicking Delete.

You can also add sub-pages to any existing content page. Simply click Add Content Item next to the appropriate page title and follow the same steps outlined above.

Please be assured that power failure to the office has no bearing on your website – all of our servers are remote and will not be affected should anything untoward arise here at Ballyhoo HQ.

Our e-commerce software Ballyhoo Commerce will support the Welsh language as of Version 1.9.7.

Translations have been added for all of the text that is standard with any installation of our e-commerce software.

This means that you will be able to add products and content to your site in Welsh as well as English, giving your users the flexibility to view your website in their preferred language.

Although Welsh is a minority language, we thought it would be a great addition to the system as so many of our customers are based in Wales.

However, the system is not limited to Welsh and is capable of supporting any number of languages – some of which will be added as standard to the system in the future – including French, German and Spanish.

If you are an existing e-commerce customer and want to use this facility on your website you need only pay for the time it takes us to upgrade your site to Version 1.9.7 (when released) – which could be as little as £40 – £80.

New e-commerce customers will enjoy this feature as standard.

Step One

On the iPhone menu select Settings.

Step Two

From the Settings menu select Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

Step Three

Under Mail, Contacts, Calendars select Add Account…

Step Four

Add Account will show you a variety of mail accounts supported by the iPhone. You need to select Other.

Step Five

You now need to select Add Mail Account under Mail on the Other menu.

Step Six

In this window you need to enter your basic account details; your name, email address, password and a description of the account, for example Work or Personal. Click Save.

The address you have entered will be the username requested in the following steps and the password will be the same in all instances.

Step Seven

The next page you see requires you to enter further details about your email account. A number of fields will be pre-populated with information you supplied in the previous step.

You must first ensure POP is selected instead of IMAP.

Then enter the incoming mail server details. The host name will always begin with pop followed by your domain, for example pop.ballyhoodemo.co.uk.

Scroll further down this page to enter the Outgoing Mail Server details. In this instance the host name will always begin with mail, for example mail.ballyhoodemo.co.uk.

Click Save.

Step Eight

Your iPhone will now try to connect to your mail server securely for incoming mail. If you do not have an SSL certificate installed on your website you will see the following message:

Although secure connection has failed be assured that your emails will still be secure as they are sent and received – the connection has simply not been validated by a certificate authority but is equally secure under what is known as a self-certification certificate.

To continue setting up your email account click Continue.

Your iPhone will then try to your mail server securely for outgoing mail. Again, if you do not have an SSL certificate installed on your domain the above message will appear. To ignore it click Continue.

You should now be able to successfully send and receive emails from the email account you have just set up.
